Anandamayi Ma, was not just considered a highly spiritual woman but a true incarnation of Adishakti. Anandamayi Ma was born on April 30, 1896, to a devoted Vaishnava Brahman family, in Kheora, united Bengal province of the earlier undivided India. Presently that place is in Bangladesh. Her family given name was Nirmala Sundari.
Sri Ma’s father was a devout Vaishnava. His name is Bipin Behari Bhattacarya. He was well known for his beautiful rendering of devotional songs; his melodious voice never failed to touch the hearts of his audience.
Despite receiving religious instruction only from her parents, “she displayed an uncanny knowledge of religious matters,” and often was witnessed in bhava, a state of ecstasy or trance like states, which were described as supernatural in nature. One particular form of worship, kirtan, devotional songs, would put her into a state of pure spiritual ecstasy. She was known to often wander off, singing devotional songs.
